Cigarette Taxes Progressive?

A new tax on cigarettes!

The most regressive tax ever proposed !

Why are so few asked to pay so much for the benefit of so many. How can we ask only 15% of the population to pay for everyones heath care cost.

Haven't we drained the less fortunate enough? The American Heart Association states”Studies show that smoking prevalence is higher among those with 9-11 years of education (35.4 percent) compared with those with more than 16 years of education (11.6 percent). It's highest among persons living below the poverty level (33.3 percent)”.The taxes on cigarettes are oppressive to the point of shameful discrimination. Is that just? It is a well known fact that the less educated and the poor, smoke in far greater numbers then the better educated well to do. Yet the better educated well to do want to pass the tax laws increasing the burden on these people. The same people who don't have the resources to go to the fancy twelve step stop smoking programs the elite went through to stop their addictions. There are many social ills in this country smoking cigarettes when put in perspective isn't all that bad.

If the state needs the money and is looking to cure a social ill at the same time to help justify the tax how about a tax on wine? Perhaps it's not addictive enough ! Sales may drop! We all know cigarette smoking is near the top of the scale for it's addictive properties. The inflexible demand curve is similar to that of gasoline. People will pay whatever is charged.

WINE WINE WINE!!!
We all know alcohol kills thousands in car accidents cost tax payer billions in health care cost to alcohol related illness and billions more in lost wages for hangovers days off and lost productivity!

The cost of alcohol misuse is staggering. 1992 dollars $107 billion and over 100,000 deaths.

www.nida.nih.gov/economiccosts/Chapter5.html

How can alcohol be blamed for 100,000 deaths each year?

  • 5% of all deaths from diseases of the circulatory system are attributed to alcohol.

  • 15% of all deaths from diseases of the respiratory system are attributed to alcohol.

  • 30% of all deaths from accidents caused by fire and flames are attributed to alcohol.

  • 30% of all accidental drowning are attributed to alcohol.

  • 30% of all suicides are attributed to alcohol.

  • 40% of all deaths due to accidental falls are attributed to alcohol.

  • 45% of all deaths in automobile accidents are attributed to alcohol.

  • 60% of all homicides are attributed to alcohol.

Yes tax wine. All wine . This tax could also be a progressive tax. The more expensive wine the more the tax. For example. Lets give the poor Thunderbird drinker a break. If the wine sells for less then $4 dollars a liter the tax is 20% ,$4.01 to $8.99 tax it at25%, $9.00 to 14.99 a 30% tax, $15.00 to $30.00 make it 35%, higher then thirty dollars a liter make it an even 50 %. That's still 25% the rate of the proposed cigarette tax.

What do you want to bet this tax on wine will never happen! Why! The rich, well to do, drink wine. These same people who want to cure the poor guys addiction to cigarettes will not part with his wine. VITA EST VIRUM. Life is wine and wine is life.

Are Californians as tolerant and progressive as they think they are?

The Political Race Family Values

THE REPUBLICANS

Fred Thompson: His most "PRISED POSSESSION HIS TROPHY WIFE" NEWS FLASH SHE"S NOT THAT HOT FRED. HOW LONG WILL YOU KEEP HER? She is starting to push the FORTIES you 65 year old shriveled up old man.

John McCain also a fake family values guy married to a Trophy wife 18 years younger after divorcing his first wife after she had a car accident. That a Boy John!

Run around Rudy and his Third Trophy "The Hunter never sleeps" Giuliani .Now here is a guy all you southern bible thumping church goers could sink your teeth into.

Now Ron Paul honestly the only true conservative in the lot. Married to the same gal for fifty yes folks fifty years. He has a gazillion grand kids and great grand kids to boot.

Mitt the Mormon Romney. Yep a family guy in the true Mormon tradition five sons and a slue of grand kids too. Yes sir he married his high school sweet heart.

Don't let me forget the front runner the Huckster Huchabee. Yes the TV preacher. He has three grow children. He does not believe in evolution. I wounder if his kids do?Just a thought.

THE DEMOCRATS

Hill and Bill. Stand by your man Hillary! You bet that fits most of you social conservative guys and dolls out there after all who amongst you all hasn't had to ask for forgiveness. Yep the same guy for 35 years. Now that's family values.

Barack Obama The young kid himself in this field of old geezers. H too married once to the same woman with a couple of kids.

Denis Kucinich the little guy with no chance of being president is on his third wife like Ruff Rudy at least she is a trophy and she just turned thirty. while he is 61.

Joe Biden another true family man. His first wife and infant daughter died in a car crash and Joe was a single parent for some time before finally getting remarried and has been married for 31 years.

John Edwards yep another true democrat with family values. He's been married to the same woman for 30 years.

Chris Dodd on his second wife after being married for 12 years he too got divorced but didn't remarried for another 17 years. he now has two little kids.

Bumbling Bill Richardson although he has a hard time in front of the cameras he really is an accomplished guy and married to his first and only wife for 35 years. A true Democrat and family values man.

So in the end sum it up all the Democrats EXCEPT DENNIS don't talk family values but live family values in the real world. Republicans live a life of debauchery and talk family values and try to impose those values on you not them. There is RON PAUL MITT AND THE HUCKSTER who at least sort of live up to what they preach.

Just some thoughts on trying to keep government out of my personal business.Hypocrisy!!!!!

The Energy Bill

What a JOKE the only problem is the JOKE IS ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE as well as all air breathing things. There is much talk about how many miles per-gallon cars should get and how coal should be made to burn cleaner and how will we convince the world nuclear power is safe again and can we make the pipe lines safer to drill in ANWAR ect.
The real problem is how do we get control away from the big oil companies, the big coal companies ,the big utility companies, and the paid off politicians. The Department of Energy is corrupt read this report and see for yourself. www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10922&page=1
This clearly shows an objective of protecting the status quo and big business. The premise is the hydrogen should be produced in large quantities and then distributed to the end user. This does one thing very well. It puts in place a cost of distribution and a profiteer on that distribution. This scenario dismisses local small production facilities. This keeps in place the electric grid the vertical monopoly of energy producer and distributors and retailers. Bold thinking, establishment crushing ideas are out there but they need the support of the people. Our society will embrace the idea because it is a good idea to breath clean air.
The fuel cell was invented in 1839.
Think small for big gains.

More on this later.

religion in politics

Good blog on impeachment Rick, I completely agree that Bush and Cheney should be impeached if only to show the rest of the world that not all of us have bought into his program. The world needs to know that at least the Democrats in this country know the difference between right and wrong and still have the cojones to do something about it....... Last week I had a conversation with a born-again Christian, a mutual friend who you will immediately recognize. We were talking about the Republican debate from the previous day and I asked him if he thought a Morman should be elected President. His reply was "absolutely not". His answer was the same for Catholics, Protestants,Hindus,Muslims etc. I then asked who was the worst President he had seen in his lifetime and his answer was George Bush. I asked if he knew that Bush is a born-again Christian and his mouth dropped open. He became very obviously flustered and said "no way, he's just a Christian". I assured him that George claims to be born-again, he informed that he needed to do research on it and would get back to me. The following day he did not bring up the subject so I finally asked him what he had found out. He answered that just as Bush claims to be born-again ,the Devil also claims to be many things. Following this line of thinking, I would have to assume that Bush talks to the Devil instead of to God as he so often claims. ..... Maybe we could start a Christians for Impeachment movement!

Hasn't he disgraced the office enough?

Once again I call out to all the SOCIALLY CONSERVATIVES the RELIGIOUS RIGHT the MORAL as oppose to the immoral REPUBLICAN BASE and ask, how can you justify what you've done? Is Torture the Christian thing to do! There should be MORAL OUTRAGE with the President you got elected. He has lied to you and now dragged you down so low you find yourself justifying torture. WOW!!! What will GOD THINK when you are at the HOLY GATE ASKING FOR FORGIVENESS ABOUT YOUR HAND IN CONDONING TORTURE TO ANOTHER HUMAN BEING.
It wasn't all that long ago I listened to the Republican Base complaining that Bill Clinton disgraced the OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENCY for having consensual sex. Now that was "in the words of LARRY CRAIG being a Naughty very Naughty Boy" . But starting a war under false pretences killing thousands for oil and total miscalculations over costs involved and still not "HUNTIN HIM DOWN DEAD OR ALIVE" catching Bin Laden and now torture! Talk about disgrace.

Here is the problem with torture. If you can torture one you can torture ten if ten 100 if 100 then 1,000 . I have been to the concentration camps in Austria and Germany I have seen what human being can do to one another when Fear Motivates. I have seen the horrors of mankind and uncivilized abhorrent behavior. Is this a part of the America I love so much? Can this really be happening here.
I call on all the Religious Right to make their Christian Values heard and move to IMPEACH President Bush to set the record straight. A moral society will not tolerate torture. Show the world what is right.Show the world America has remorse and now humility . We have made a mistake and are taking steps to fix them. In the name of Jesus Christ forgive us our sins past. IMPEACH NOW!!!!

Just One More Reason to Ramble.

Obamba loves mercy

"South Carolina — January 26th is your moment," Winfrey said, referring to the state Democratic primary date during a campaign stop alongside the Illinois senator. "It's your time to seize the opportunity to support a man who, as the Bible says, loves mercy and does justly."

Is anyone else sick ,I mean SICK TO YOUR STOMACH SICK and tired of religion in politics. As an old friend told me once, "it isn't even a transparent effort to curry favor." Do these politicians think we are that stupid. OR ARE WE! Now we have Oprah and Obamba making Bible references for Christ Sake.

I know many of you EVANGELICALS want a President to take care of you and your needs ,sort of the way the union members want a President to take care of their needs. Just like the poor working class family wants Medical Care for their family and thinks a President could help in some respect.

But do you think the President of the United States of America should have to address your lying cheating sinful soul? Should he be doing "GODS WORK"? Shouldn't that be left to the PREACHERS, PASTORS, PRIEST, MULLAHS, FATHERS ,MOTHERS, SAINTS ,AND ALL THOSE OTHER GOD FEARIN TYPES? Shouldn't you ask yourself if you really want politics in your church? I've always thought the REPUBLICAN CONSERVATIVES WANTED LESS GOVERNMENT. You all got the Faith Based Initiative using my sinful pagan tax dollars. You have opened your church doors to the Federal Government of which I am a proud member. So you have opened your doors to all the Mormons ,Jehovah's , The Buddhists, The Church of Scientology ,The Haily Bop Team Players, Yo ism Open Religion , the Hare Krishna, Heavens Gate, Order Of The Solar Temple, Islams and the list goes on and on and on.You have opened your doors and your financial books. Think of the big picture if you can: I know it's hard sometimes. but think of guys like me and all those other non believers working at the IRS. You have just given us full reason to go through the books of all your donations and check to see if they match up with the TAX RETURNS of those who said they donated. Now what do you think of Religion and Government. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE SOUND FAMILIAR. Think of why for over 200 years we have not had a "FAITH BASED INITIATIVE". Think about smaller government think about the success the federal government has with corrupting good ideas and losing control of spending but equally good at telling you what you can and can't do.
Think about putting back into the hands of those who do religion not lying cheating say anything to get elected politicians. Think about it and start naming the politicians you know who are truthful and have not made deals with the seedy big business types the low life scum sucking lawyers types that spent millions to get them elected. Think about it!
Just some Ramblings.

MITT ROMNEY TAKES THE TEST

Well! What do you think? Is the constitution safer with a Mormon or a Baptist pastor Article 6 of the constitution states that" ...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

"I will take care to separate the affairs of government from any religion, but I will not separate us from the God who gave us liberty," he said.WHERE DID HE GET THAT FROM?

"While differences in theology exist between the churches in America, we share a common creed of moral convictions," he said. THE MORALITY OF STONING AN ADULTEROUS WIFE IS A MUSLIM CONVICTION IS THAT THE SAME AS HIS CONVICTION.
"No candidate should become the spokesman for his faith. For if he becomes president, he will need the prayers of the people of all faiths," he said.

It seems to me Mitt was not embracing the foundation of article 6 test but rather giving his "QUALIFICATIONS" His Religious beliefs as a "CHRISTIAN"
He made a connection of Morality to God. Whose Morality? Whose GOD! OH Jesus Christ.
It seems to me the Republican party has embraced the Religious test. All of their candidates are running around trying to get endorsements from religious leaders. The so called or self proclaimed Moral Majority or today's coined word socially conservative Republican Base.

"Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom. Freedom opens the windows of the soul so that man can discover his most profound beliefs and commune with God. Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone."

WHAT!!!! WHATTTTTTT! Where in the hell did he get this? Since when does freedom require religion?

"A person should not be elected because of his faith, nor should he be rejected because of his faith. Let me assure you that no authorities of my church, or of any other church for that matter, will ever exert influence on presidential decisions. Their authority is theirs within the province of church affairs, and it ends where the affairs of the nation begin. As governor, I tried to do the right, as best I knew it, serving the law and answering to the Constitution. I did not confuse the particular teachings of my church with the obligations of the office and of the Constitution. And, of course, I would not do so as president. I will put no doctrine of any church above the plain duties of the office and the sovereign authority of the law."

"The founders proscribed the establishment of a state religion, but they did not countenance the elimination of religion from the public square. We are a nation 'Under God' and in God, we do indeed trust."

In God We trust did not become a part of the Unite States motto until 1956 almost 200 years after our Declaration of independence.
It wasn't until 2003 Georgia put it on it's flag and Jeb Bush made it Florida's state seal and therefore on its flag as well.
I fear more the anything the falling of our country to the dogma of religion the stifling of scientific progress the suffocation of personal freedom to a religious base with limited sense of reason based solely on religion and an all knowing "GOD" ALLAH or most likely the person who can get people to follow him based on the belief in a GOD LIKE JIM JONES , OSOMA BIN LADEN or PAT ROBERTSON. That is the FEAR I FEAR MOST!

Religion and Politics

Mitt will give a speech about religion and politics tomorrow. Will we believe him? I just heard Tucker say we are much less a theocracy today then we were ten years ago much to the dismay of the secular left. Blatant misrepresentation of fact again there Smucker. Did we have a president who said he answered to a higher father when he invaded Iraq.Did we have a FAITH BASES INITIATIVE funded with millions of tax payer dollars. Did we have a corrupt judicial system staffed by Pat Robertson's Regents University Graduates? To quote Charlie Savage of the Boston Globe Graduates of the law school have been among the most influential of the more than 150 Regent University alumni hired to federal government positions since President Bush took office in 2001, according to a university website.Regent University School of Law, founded by televangelist Pat Robertson to provide "Christian leadership to change the world," Have we forgotten the Monica Goodling or John Ashcroft influences on our government?Check out this website for yourself.
http://www.boston.com/news/education/higher/articles/2007/04/08/scandal_puts_spotlight_on_christian_law_school/
So the Question is is it right to ask questions about religion of our candidates. YOU BET IT IS!!! Can we afford to have a religious extremest as our president again as we do in George Bush. Think of George as a mild case what would happen if we had a Pat Robertson as our President! Do we think there should be a separation of church and state? Should we test the next to be President about his willingness to adhere to religion beliefs before the constitution. How do we know?
Just some Ramblings!!
